I picked up the February copy of Northwest Yachting that had an interesting article on engines. They took two identical CDory 22 cruisers and rigged one with a new eTec 115, the other with a 1988 Evinrude 115. The fuel usage of the eTec was 38% less than the older engine. On a 33 mile run, the savings by using the new engine was calculated at $11. At the price of fuel these days, that is significant.

Not sure if they have an online version, but the story is on page 78 (Sea Stories).

That is a neat article.... and good reading... I sure wish they had done two more tests...one using a later Honda engine and one with a Merc. or something a bit more comparable.... a 1988 engine is getting pretty old... I really would like to see a closer comparison using that Etec engine... good PR for C-Dory though..

At the Seattle Boat Show C-Dory had a video of that test running on a TV.

Nice helo shots of the boats going around Bainbridge island.
The boats only had 8 or 9 gallon of gas on board and the old motor ran out way short of the finish line.
 
My accountant has a 26' Striper with an eTec, not sure of the HP. He told me the other day that he went through 6 sets of plugs on it last season. :shock: I don't know if that's common for all eTecs. He did say it's a real nice engine other than burning up plugs.

Wow!!! That's not been my experience with the E-TEC engines at all. I assume he's been talking to someone at his dealership or at Bombardier but if not I sure would...something has to be amiss. [I am assuming he's using XD100 Evinrude oil and has the engine programmed for that.]

I have the E-Tec 90 and did go through 1 set of plugs at approx. 100 hours, but I'm pretty sure it was how I was using the engine. With the cold water here in the PNW and all the idling I was doing, the engine was not getting hot enough. Now I always run the engine wide open a bit, until I notice the steam coming out of it, and then I'll go slow down for trolling or siteseeing. The original plugs carboned up and the service information from the engine chip showed the engine running colder than normal.
